Pallet and roll mathMost northern growers harvest 16 by 24 inch slabs at 2.67 sq ft each, sold in bundles marketed as 10 sq ft rolls, on pallets covering 400 to 500 sq ft. Southern growers commonly ship 450 sq ft pallets of 16 by 24 inch pieces. A full pallet weighs 2,000 to 3,000 lb wet — plan machine handling or a tight drop location.Add 5% waste on a rectangular lawn and 10 to 15% where the lawn wraps curved beds. Always round up to whole pallets: growers rarely split them, and a short pallet means a second delivery fee.Prepare the soil before you count the sod

Kill or strip existing turf, then till or rake to a 4 inch loosened depth.

Amend with 1 to 2 inches of compost, tilled in, for compacted or construction-scraped soils.

Grade 1 inch below adjacent walks and drives so the finished sod sits flush.

Apply starter fertilizer at 1 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft immediately before laying.

Roll or lightly compact the finished grade — footprints telegraph through new sod.
